What PNG is good at

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was, with 8 or 16 bits per channel and a full alpha channel. That makes it the right format for screenshots, UI exports, logos, and line art, where a single softened edge or a shifted flat colour is visible. The cost is size: because it never discards detail, a photograph saved as PNG is routinely several times larger than the same photograph as JPG or WebP.

What JPG gives you

JPG compresses by discarding the fine detail the eye is least sensitive to, which works extremely well on photographs and continuous-tone images and poorly on sharp text and flat colour. It has no alpha channel, and every re-save compounds the artifacts of the previous one, so it is a format to export to rather than to work in.

Converting PNG to JPG

JPG files are far smaller than PNG for photographs and are accepted everywhere, which makes the conversion useful for email attachments and upload forms with a size limit. Because JPG has no alpha channel, any transparent pixel has to become a solid colour. Pick that colour before you convert rather than discovering it afterwards. The move from lossless PNG to lossy JPG is one-way: the discarded detail is gone, so keep the original if you expect to edit the image again. The result accepted by effectively every upload form, print service, and photo editor in existence.

Usually, but at a cost. JPG is designed for photographs, and on screenshots it softens sharp text and adds faint blocks around flat areas of colour. For screenshots, slides, and diagrams, try PNG to WebP first: it stays crisp and is often smaller than the JPG too. Use JPG when the destination only accepts JPG.

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default and you can choose a different colour before converting.

No. Because the conversion happens on your own machine there is no server quota to hit. The practical limit is your device's memory, and files are processed one at a time to keep that manageable.

No. Every tool on this page runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas and Web Worker APIs. Your files are read from disk, processed in the tab, and written straight back to your downloads folder. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged, which also means the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page loads.

It is completely free with no signup, no account, no daily limit, and no watermark. Screenshot Studio is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence.
