What JPG is good at

JPG compresses by discarding the fine detail the eye is least sensitive to, which works extremely well on photographs and continuous-tone images and poorly on sharp text and flat colour. It has no alpha channel, and every re-save compounds the artifacts of the previous one, so it is a format to export to rather than to work in.

What PNG gives you

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was, with 8 or 16 bits per channel and a full alpha channel. That makes it the right format for screenshots, UI exports, logos, and line art, where a single softened edge or a shifted flat colour is visible. The cost is size: because it never discards detail, a photograph saved as PNG is routinely several times larger than the same photograph as JPG or WebP.

Converting JPG to PNG

PNG is lossless, so converting to it stops further quality loss when you plan to edit and re-save an image repeatedly. Transparency survives the conversion, so a JPG with a cut-out subject stays cut out as PNG. Re-encoding always costs something, so convert from the highest-quality copy you have rather than from an already-compressed export. The result opens in every browser, operating system, and image editor released since the late 1990s.

Frequently asked questions

PNG is lossless, so converting to it stops further quality loss when you plan to edit and re-save an image repeatedly.

No. The detail JPG discarded when the file was first saved cannot be recovered, so the PNG looks identical to the JPG, artifacts included, and is usually several times larger. Convert when you need a lossless working copy to edit and re-save repeatedly, or when a tool only accepts PNG.

No. Because the conversion happens on your own machine there is no server quota to hit. The practical limit is your device's memory, and files are processed one at a time to keep that manageable.

No. Every tool on this page runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas and Web Worker APIs. Your files are read from disk, processed in the tab, and written straight back to your downloads folder. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged, which also means the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page loads.

It is completely free with no signup, no account, no daily limit, and no watermark. Screenshot Studio is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence.
